Who you are:
You are in the your first few years of being a leader after transitioning from being an individual contributor. You took this position because you want to make a difference and you know this will be a great step in your career. You are great at the business side of things, but you are less sure of your leadership know-how and execution. Your direct reports are good at what they do. There is no question of talent or lack of skill, but some of them need to be more motivated to take the ball and run with it.
You are finally in a role where you have enough influence and you can implement some things that would be amazing for the company. You want to be in a position where you can bring out the best in people, inspiring them to be innovative and efficient. You want to be somebody that is seen as open, empathetic, easy to talk to and also gets results from your direct reports. You aspire to be a leader, not a manager. Most of all, you want to be seen as a game changer.
What your issues tend to be:
You are used to feeling in control of getting things done and you are finding it hard to give up that control to your direct reports. You have that “Type A – Control Freak” tendency sometimes when you are feeling stressed. You get obsessive where everything has to be done a certain way and you get nit picky because you want to see that your direct reports get it. They may be doing a good job but you still spend a lot of time overlooking and managing their work. Sometimes you feel the need to step in and micromanage to make sure everything stays on track until you trust that they can do it up to your expectations.
Your biggest challenge is knowing if you are doing OK as a leader. You work in a large company and have little time to pause and get real-time feedback. So you are constantly asking yourself “Am I on track? Am I doing things the best way possible? Am I making a difference in the organization? Am I making a difference with my employees? Are they happy? Do they feel inspired?” These are unknowns because you have stepped into uncharted waters in your leadership position. Not only are you learning how to deal with the stress in this position, but you are also learning how to deal with your team’s stress.
What you need most right now:
Most of all you need your direct reports to be on the same page with you. You need them to take something and run with it, using their own creative juices to make it work and exceed your expectations. You want to be in a position where all you have to do is focus on creating a team environment and help clear the way for them to make things happen.
You want a step-by-step plan that lays everything out to create that trust so that you can: 1) effectively delegate without having to worry about how it’s going to get done and 2) motivate your team to come to you with ideas and suggestions and really create their own path.
You also want a mentor or somebody who can be a sounding board who can help you sort through these uncharted waters. Someone who is able to tell you “this is going to happen to you at any organization” or “you should address this” or “you should probably let that slide”. Because you can’t go to your boss, shut the door and really tell him or her how you feel. You don’t want that kind of transparency with your boss because you want to show them that you are comfortable with your role and ready to step up to the next level.
